Positive or Negative: Precocious

Strictly by definition, this word has positive connotations. A child who is precocious is clever--if not a prodigy, then certainly talented. But I find when I use the word precocious, I'm usually describing behaviour I find a bit obnoxious.
When you hear the word "precocious" is your impression positive or negative?
